Coloring books, puzzle books, journals and activity books live on paperback margins, and paperback margins are thin. For these books the first advertising decision is not a keyword or a bid. It is the price, because the price decides whether ads can make money at all.
The $9.99 line
On Amazon.com, KDP pays a 60% royalty on paperbacks priced at $9.99 or more, and 50% on paperbacks priced below $9.99. Printing is then deducted. For a low-content book that one cent can change everything:
| Price | Rate | You earn | Break-even |
|---|---|---|---|
| $7.99 | 50% | $1.16 | 14% |
| $8.99 | 50% | $1.66 | 18% |
| $9.98 | 50% | $2.15 | 22% |
| $9.99 | 60% | $3.15 | 32% |
| $12.99 | 60% | $4.95 | 38% |
An 8.5 × 11 in coloring book, 100 black-ink pages. KDP counts 8.5 × 11 as a large trim size, which prints at $2.84 up to 108 pages. You earn = rate × list price − $2.84 printing; break-even ACOS = what you earn ÷ price.
Going from $9.98 to $9.99 adds a whole dollar to every sale and raises the break-even ACOS from 22% to 32%. At $7.99, the break-even is 14%. Very few keywords can be advertised profitably at 14%, so a book priced there can rarely support ads at all.
$1.16 × 5% conversion ≈ $0.06 a click
Well under what most book keywords cost. At $9.99 the same book can afford about $0.16.
Puzzle books and smaller trims
A 6 × 9 in puzzle book of 120 black-ink pages prints for $2.44 ($1.00 plus $0.012 a page). At $7.99 it earns $1.56, a break-even ACOS near 19%. At $9.99 it earns $3.55, near 36%. The pattern is the same: under $9.99, ads have very little room.
Who searches for these books
Low-content books are often bought for someone else, and the searches say so: “coloring books for adults”, “large print word search for seniors”, “activity book for kids ages 4–8”, “gratitude journal for women”. Build keywords from three parts:
- The type: coloring book, word search, sudoku, gratitude journal, activity book.
- The reader: adults, seniors, teens, kids ages 6–8, men, women, nurses, teachers.
- The angle: large print, relaxation, animals, mandalas, Christmas, travel size.
“Large print word search for seniors” tells you exactly who is buying. “Word search” on its own attracts everyone and converts like it. Bid higher on combinations and lower on bare types.
Gift season is your season
Much of the year’s demand for these books arrives between October and December, in gift searches: “stocking stuffers for mom”, “gifts for grandma”, “christmas coloring book”. Put gift keywords in their own campaign, start it weeks before the peak, and switch it off in January. The Q4 plan.
Product targeting in a crowded niche
Low-content niches are full of near-identical listings. Targeting the product pages of the bestsellers your book most resembles, with product targeting, often converts better than broad keywords, because the shopper has already shown they want that kind of book. Check each target’s price first: a $6.99 competitor makes your $9.99 book look expensive on its page.
A checklist before you advertise
- Price at $9.99 or more if the book can bear it, and work out your break-even ACOS from the real royalty.
- Make sure the cover sells at thumbnail size and the first images show the inside.
- Start with an automatic campaign on a low bid, then harvest the searches that sell. How.
- Add reader and angle keywords; keep bare type keywords on low bids.
- Run gift keywords as a separate seasonal campaign.
Common questions
Can you run Amazon ads for low-content books?
Yes. Coloring, puzzle, activity books and journals are paperbacks, and paperbacks can be advertised with Sponsored Products like any other book. The limit is economic: below $9.99 the royalty is often too small to pay for clicks.
What royalty does a KDP coloring book earn?
On Amazon.com, 60% of the list price at $9.99 or more, or 50% below $9.99, minus printing. A 100-page 8.5 × 11 in black-ink coloring book prints for $2.84, so at $9.99 it earns about $3.15 a sale.
What price should a KDP coloring book be?
If you plan to advertise it, $9.99 or more is usually the minimum that leaves room for ads, because the royalty rate rises from 50% to 60% at $9.99. Below that, break-even ACOS is typically under 22%.
How much does KDP charge to print a coloring book?
For an 8.5 × 11 in black-ink book, $2.84 up to 108 pages, then $1.00 plus $0.017 a page. Colour interiors cost considerably more.
What are low-content books?
Books whose value is in their format rather than their text: coloring books, puzzle books, journals, planners, notebooks and activity books. They are popular on KDP because they are quick to produce, which also makes their niches crowded.
- On Amazon.com, paperbacks earn 60% at $9.99 or more and 50% below it, minus printing.
- A 100-page 8.5 × 11 coloring book earns $1.16 at $7.99 but $3.15 at $9.99 — break-even ACOS 14% versus 32%.
- Below $9.99, most low-content books cannot advertise profitably.
- Build keywords from type + reader + angle; bid low on bare types like “word search”.
- Gift season drives these books: run gift keywords as their own Q4 campaign.
