From October to Christmas, more shoppers are on Amazon than at any other time of year, and far more of them are buying gifts. More advertisers turn up as well, so a click costs more. What decides whether your Q4 is profitable is not whether clicks get dearer, because they will. It is whether your conversion rate rises faster than your cost per click.
The Q4 calendar for 2026
| When | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Now – mid-October | Normal traffic, normal prices | Audit last year; switch seasonal keywords back on; raise budgets first |
| 6–7 October | Prime Big Deal Days | A first test of peak-season traffic |
| Fri 27 November | Black Friday | Budgets high enough to last the whole day |
| Mon 30 November | Cyber Monday | Same; check spend by mid-afternoon |
| Mid-December | Paperback delivery cut-offs | Start easing paperback bids once guaranteed delivery ends |
| 26 Dec – January | New Kindles and gift cards | Keep eBook ads running; many authors see a spike |
Ramp up two to four weeks early
Campaigns do not switch on at full strength. A keyword you start on Black Friday has no history, no sales record and no position, and it is competing on the most expensive day of the year. Amazon’s own advice is simply to raise budgets ahead of time. We suggest two to four weeks before the peak, so that by late November your campaigns already have data and your book already has some sales momentum.
Raise bids in steps — around 10–20% a week on keywords that are already profitable — rather than all at once. Each step lets you see whether the extra spend is buying sales or just paying more for the same ones.
Switch last year’s keywords back on
The most expensive Q4 mistake is not a bad bid. It is a keyword that sold well last Christmas, was paused in January, and never came back on. Before you add anything new:
- Filter your keywords to paused, and sort by sales in last year’s October to December.
- Switch back on the ones that sold at an acceptable ACOS.
- Check that the campaign and the ad group are enabled too. A keyword switched on inside a paused campaign still gets no impressions.
Gift searches beat topic searches
In Q4, a large share of book buyers are not shopping for themselves. They type “gifts for dad”, “stocking stuffers for teens” or “christmas gifts for book lovers”, not your genre. For books that make good gifts — puzzle and activity books, humour, cookbooks, journals, children’s books, coffee-table non-fiction — gift and occasion keywords often convert better in November and December than the topic keywords that work the rest of the year.
Treat them as seasonal. Add them in a separate campaign so you can switch the whole group off in January without touching the keywords that sell all year.
The budget that runs out at 2 p.m.
On a peak day a campaign can spend its whole daily budget by early afternoon. After that, your ads are gone for the rest of the day, including the evening, when a lot of people shop. The dashboard still shows a respectable day of sales, so the loss is easy to miss.
By default, Amazon may already spend up to double a campaign’s daily budget on busy days. So a campaign that still runs dry by mid-afternoon on Black Friday has a budget that is genuinely too small. Check in the afternoon on Black Friday and Cyber Monday whether any campaign shows as out of budget, and raise the budget of any profitable one that does. Amazon Ads also lets you schedule budget increases for set dates, with budget rules, so you can raise them in advance.
After the peak
- Paperbacks: once Amazon stops guaranteeing delivery before Christmas, gift buyers stop ordering print. Lower paperback bids from that point.
- eBooks: the days after Christmas bring new Kindles and gift-card balances. Keep eBook ads running into January.
- January: switch off the seasonal campaign, take bids back down in steps, and write down which keywords you paused so next September’s audit takes minutes.
The Q4 mistakes that cost the most
- Starting on Black Friday. No history, the highest prices of the year, and no time to learn.
- Judging the peak on the week before. Sales are credited to earlier clicks, so the last few days always look worse than they end up. In Q4 that gap costs more, because every day is worth more.
- Raising bids across the board. Raise the keywords that are already profitable. A keyword losing money in October usually loses more in December.
- Letting budgets cap out. A profitable campaign that stops at 2 p.m. is losing the best part of the day.
- Forgetting to switch it all off. Gift keywords that sold in December waste money in February.
Common questions
When should I start Black Friday ads on Amazon?
Two to four weeks before, so by late October or early November for Black Friday on 27 November 2026. Campaigns need time to gather data and build sales history before the most competitive days.
Do Amazon ads cost more at Christmas?
Usually, yes. More advertisers compete for the same searches, so the cost per click rises. More shoppers are buying gifts too, so conversion rates often rise as well. What matters is whether sales rise faster than costs, and your own last Q4 is the best guide.
Should I raise my bids for Black Friday?
On keywords that are already profitable, yes — in steps of around 10–20% a week from October. Raising every bid at once mostly buys expensive clicks on keywords that were not working in the first place.
When is Black Friday 2026?
Friday 27 November 2026. Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November 2026.
Should I stop my Amazon ads after Christmas?
Not for eBooks: new Kindles and gift cards keep readers buying into January. Paperback gift demand ends earlier, once guaranteed Christmas delivery ends. Switch off seasonal gift keywords in January, and keep the ones that sell all year.
- The Q4 question is not whether clicks get dearer — they will — but whether conversion rises faster.
- Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026; Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November.
- Raise budgets and switch keywords on two to four weeks early; raise bids in weekly steps on profitable keywords only.
- Switch last Q4’s best keywords back on — and check the campaign and ad group are enabled as well.
- Gift and occasion keywords belong in their own campaign, so January is one switch.
- Watch for budgets that run out mid-afternoon on peak days.
