Amazon is a search engine with a checkout. Selling a book there comes down to two jobs: getting it in front of the right shoppers, and making the book page convince them. Most authors work hard on the first and neglect the second — and then pay for ads that send visitors to a page that does not sell.

The three steps every sale goes through

StepWhat decides itWhat you control
SeenSearch results, categories, “customers also bought”, adsKeywords, categories, title, ads
ClickedThe thumbnail, title, price and star ratingCover, title, price
BoughtThe book page: description, look inside, reviewsDescription, sample, reviews over time

Fix them in reverse order. A better page raises the value of every visitor you will ever get; more visitors to a weak page only buys you proof that the page is weak.

1 · Make the book page sell

  • Cover at thumbnail size. Shoppers see it the size of a stamp. Genre and mood must be obvious at that size.
  • The first two lines of the description. Only these show before “Read more”. Lead with the hook, not the backstory.
  • The sample. Look Inside shows the opening pages; make sure they start with the story or the promise, not pages of front matter.
  • Price for the category. Compare the bestsellers in your category; a price well above them needs a reason on the page.
  • Reviews. Build them honestly: an advance reader team, a request at the back of the book, your mailing list. Amazon prohibits paid or incentivised reviews.

2 · Get found without paying

  • Categories: choose the most specific accurate categories, where your book can reach the top 100 rather than drown in a broad one.
  • Keywords: use KDP’s seven keyword boxes for phrases readers search that are not already in your title. How to fill them.
  • Title and subtitle: for non-fiction, a subtitle that states the benefit in the reader’s words.
  • Series and backlist: every book is a doorway to the others; link series properly so readers find book two.
  • Promotions: if your eBook is in KDP Select, a Kindle Countdown Deal or free days can bring a burst of readers and reviews. KDP Select, pros and cons.

3 · Use ads for the part you can control

Organic visibility on Amazon is earned slowly and lost quickly. Amazon ads are the one lever you can switch on today, point at the exact searches you want, and measure to the cent. They work best on a page that already converts, and they pay for themselves only below your break-even ACOS.

A simple launch sequence

  1. Before launch: page ready, advance readers lined up, categories and keywords set.
  2. Launch week: tell your list and readers; ask for honest reviews; start one automatic Sponsored Products campaign on a modest budget.
  3. Weeks two to four: let the ads gather data; do not judge on the first days. Then harvest the searches that sell.
  4. After a month: compare total sales in KDP with ad-attributed sales to see what the ads are adding. How.

Common questions

How do I sell my book on Amazon?

Publish it through KDP, then work on three things in order: a book page that converts (cover, description, sample, reviews), visibility without paying (categories, keywords, series links, promotions), and Amazon ads aimed at the searches your readers use.

How do I get my book noticed on Amazon?

Choose specific categories where it can rank, fill KDP’s seven keyword boxes with phrases readers search, gather honest reviews, and run Sponsored Products ads, which show your book in search results immediately.

Do I need ads to sell books on Amazon?

Not always, but ads are the only way to put a new book in front of shoppers straight away and control exactly where it appears. Many books sell organically only after ads have given them sales history.

How can I promote my book on Amazon for free?

Improve the book page, choose accurate niche categories, use all seven keyword boxes, link your series, build reviews honestly, and, if your eBook is in KDP Select, run a Kindle Countdown Deal or free days.

How many books do self-published authors sell?

There is no reliable public average, and the spread is enormous: most titles sell a handful of copies, a few sell many thousands. What you can control is the book page, the visibility you earn, and whether your ads are profitable.

Key takeaways
  • Every sale goes seen → clicked → bought; fix them in reverse order.
  • The book page — cover at thumbnail size, first two lines, sample, reviews — decides whether visits become sales.
  • Free visibility comes from specific categories, keyword boxes, series links and promotions.
  • Ads are the lever you control today; they pay only below your break-even ACOS.
  • After a month, compare KDP total sales with ad sales to see what the ads add.
